A talented young drummer from Bishops Tawton has achieved an impressive distinction in his Grade 8 drum exam, an extraordinary accomplishment for a 10-year-old.
Zebedee Smale has been passionate about drumming from a young age.
His mother, Hester Berry, recalled: “He was always bashing out rhythms, even before he could walk. We got him a big African cowhide drum when he was two and his first drum kit when he was three.”
Speaking about her son's achievement, Hester said: “It’s a lovely surprise, and we're especially proud of him as he's only 10.”
Zebedee, who was recently diagnosed with ADHD, has faced challenges, but his mother highlighted his dedication:
“He’s worked very hard at his practice and truly deserved his distinction. His drum teacher, Martin Bradshaw, believes there aren’t many children his age who have reached this level.”
Music has always been a part of Zebedee’s life.
“I think it’s just in him; he’s never been able to stop drumming on things!” said Hester.
Zebedee’s father, David, is also a musician, and the young drummer draws inspiration from bands like Rush, Led Zeppelin, and Iron Maiden.
Currently, he plays with North Devon Music Centre and hopes to one day perform in a progressive rock or heavy metal band.
