Residents in North Devon have been sharing their opinions over the news that funding for North Devon District Hospital has been delayed by at least ten years, as announced by the Health Secretary in January.
The hospital in Barnstaple had been promised major improvements by the previous Conservative government.
Now, the Labour government has stated that due to pressure on the public finances, the work cannot be done at present, and the timeline has been pushed back until at least 2035, though it could extend to between 2035 and 2038.
The North Devon Gazette has invited readers to share their experiences and explain how this funding would have benefited them – now they must wait at least another ten years before any action is taken.
The Gazette is running a campaign supporting local MP Ian Roome, aiming to bring funding forward and raise awareness of the hospital's urgent need for investment.
Many are concerned that they will have to be diverted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter for care as a last resort.
David Kouwenhoven commented on the Gazette's Facebook page: “An absolute disgrace! It needs upgrading, not in ten years’ time. People in Barnstaple can’t afford to go to Exeter.”
Elsie Hardy added: “It will mean more of us being sent to Exeter.”
Some have also blamed the newly appointed Labour government for this crisis.
Colin Burton told the Gazette: “Unfortunately, under a Labour government, now is not the opportune time for any realistic, successful campaigning to get the hospital that North Devon needs and deserves. Let’s face it, there’s no chance of Labour winning any seats in this area.”
On the other hand, the infrastructure of housing has become a concern.
Residents and locals worry that the continuous development of houses on empty land will lead to a flood of new residents, which current locals believe will cause overcrowding in the area.
Barbara Jenkins commented on the Gazette's Facebook post: “Now is the time to divert the money from overseas aid to funding this vital hospital. With our irresponsible councils giving the go-ahead for more housing, how are we expected to cope?”
Alongside this, Stuart Thomas said: “But yet we keep building more houses without any additional support. The country is on its knees.”
