Six-week gas works to cause lane closures on main North Devon road

A six-week project to upgrade gas pipes in Barnstaple has been announced, with work scheduled to start on February 17.

The project, which will take place in the Belle Meadow Road area of Barnstaple, is said to be essential to ensure the safe flow of gas to heat and power local homes and businesses.

Due to the works, Wales & West Utilities, which is carrying out the project, has agreed with Devon County Council that traffic management measures will be in place throughout.

This will include lane and footpath closures on Belle Meadow Road, with footpath closures extending onto Alexandra Road as the works progress.

Barring any engineering difficulties, the project is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Roxanne Whittaker from Wales & West Utilities, who is managing the work, said: “This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today and to ensure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on-site throughout the project to ensure our work is completed as safely and quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.”
