The Gazette can exclusively reveal that the junction of Strand Lane, located on the A361 in Braunton, has recorded the highest number of speeding offences in North Devon between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024.
According to recent data obtained through a Freedom of Information request, Strand Lane has become a hotspot for speeding, raising concerns about road safety in the area.
Recent data also shows that across Devon and Cornwall, a staggering £12 million in speeding fines has been issued over the past three years, with £4.5 million of that total handed out in the last year alone.
The Gazette has reached out to Councillor Ricky Knight, who represents the Heanton Punchardon ward, for his perspective on the issue.
Mr Knight told the Gazette that: “This junction managed to kill two of my friends many years ago - it's a terrible black spot, despite the obvious, clear speed restriction. Coming out of Strand Lane onto the main road at times is nigh on impossible. Likewise for cyclists and pedestrians wishing to access the Tarka Trail.”
“Speeding is sadly inevitable for some drivers, as the junction is so close to the dual carriageway."
The Gazette has also contacted Devon and Cornwall Police and Councillor Pru Maskell for further comment.
With the spotlight now on Strand Lane, questions are being raised about what steps can be taken to address the issue and ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians in the area.
