Devon County Council has issued a warning as Storm Bert approaches, bringing heavy rain and strong winds this weekend.

The Met Office has named the storm and issued Yellow Weather Warnings for both rain and wind.

The rain warning begins at 6 am on Saturday and lasts until 11:45 pm on Sunday, with up to 120mm of rain expected over Dartmoor and 10–40mm across the rest of the county.

The wind warning runs from 3 pm on Saturday to 9 pm on Sunday, with gusts potentially reaching 70mph on the coast and 60mph inland.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Management, said: “As with previous storms, there is a chance that Storm Bert will cause disruption to travel.

“We know how storms impact our roads, and there will be a possibility of surface water flooding and debris on the roads, so please drive according to conditions and be aware that you may come across unexpected hazards.

“There are a lot of leaves still in the trees, and the wind is likely to bring much of that down. That could lead to blocked drains and gullies and affect road drainage.

“We will have teams on standby to react to issues as they arise, and we will be working closely with Town and Parish wardens to alert us to blocked drains and even undertake minor leaf clearance where possible and safe to do so. We also welcome any support from local residents.”

Fourteen flood alerts and up to 12 flood warnings are anticipated, with South Dartmoor and East Devon expected to be the worst hit.

A flood alert has also been issued for South Devon’s coastal areas during the morning high tide.

The storm may disrupt road, rail, air, and ferry services, and flying debris and coastal flooding are possible.

Highways teams, including tree surgeons, will be on standby to respond to incidents.

Travel advice from Devon County Council:

  • Be alert to fallen trees and branches, particularly on minor roads.
  • Consider if your journey is essential and heed weather warnings.
  • Never drive through floodwater; find an alternative route.
  • Reduce speed, increase the distance between vehicles, and drive cautiously.
