There is no doubt that being diagnosed with motor neurone disease has completely changed my life.
It’s certainly not something you expect to hear at just 40 years old but it’s where I find myself after months of feeling unwell.
While receiving this news has been incredibly difficult to deal with for me and my family and friends, the shining light throughout this dark time has been North Devon Hospice.
Since being referred to this wonderful charity, my family and I have been able to access all kinds of support that has made a real difference to all of us. For me, my hospice nurse Emma has offered practical help and guidance, while the hospice’s patient group has allowed me to meet people in a similar situation and share my thoughts and questions in a safe and inviting space.
My kids have also been scooped up by the hospice and are having regular counselling sessions with the supportive care team. I can’t tell you what a relief this is knowing they have such lovely and supportive people to share their feelings or worries with now and as things progress.
While I sadly can’t change the situation I find myself in, I want to use my time and energy to help spread awareness of the hospice and do as much as I can to raise vital funds for this amazing charity that has become and will continue to be a lifeline for me and my family. That’s why this month, I’m hosting The Great Festive Bake Off and Tea Party here in Barnstaple, and I’d love you to be part of it!
On Saturday, November 30, join me at Roundswell Community Centre to get in the Christmas spirit and enter your bake into one of these four categories: best decorated Christmas cake, best classic cake/cupcake, best gluten free cake, or best 16 and under entry. Entries are just £1 per item and must be entered between 1-2pm for judging to take place shortly after.
Once we’ve crowned our festive bake-off champions, the tea party can commence and we’ll be sampling all of the delicious cakes entered alongside the perfect accompaniment: a warming cuppa! There will also be a raffle, crafts, kids’ activities, and plenty more to enjoy as part of this festive afternoon, so do come along!
Every pound raised at this event will make a real difference to families like mine experiencing their toughest times. So, get your mixing bowl out, oven gloves on, and Christmas tunes blaring – I look forward to seeing what Christmas creations you bring to the table! Thank you so much for your support.
