The M5 motorway in Somerset remains closed in both directions between Junction 24 (Bridgwater) and Junction 25 (Taunton) following a police-led investigation into a collision last night, 11 November.

National Highways confirmed the road will stay closed until at least midday today, 12 November.

The incident, involving a pedestrian and a car, occurred around 11pm on 11 November.

A 17-year-old girl lost her life at the scene.

Avon & Somerset Police stated that her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

"Our thoughts are with them," the police added in a statement.

Current delays on the M5 southbound are approximately 45 minutes, with congestion stretching four miles, while northbound traffic is experiencing delays of around 10 minutes.

Diversion Routes:

Southbound Traffic: Follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on local signs:

  • At J24 Huntworth Interchange, exit the M5, taking the 3rd exit onto Huntworth Lane/A38.
  • At the next roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Taunton Road/A38.
  • Continue southbound on the A38 towards Taunton.
  • At the A358/A38 interchange, turn left onto the A358 towards the M5.
  • At M5 J25 Blackbrook Roundabout, take the 4th exit onto the M5 southbound.

Northbound Traffic: Follow the solid circle diversion symbol on local signs (reverse of the southbound route):

  • Exit the M5 northbound at J25 and join the A358 Toneway northbound.
  • Continue until the junction with the A38 Bridgwater Road.
  • Turn right onto the A38 and continue northbound towards North Petherton and Bridgwater.
  • Re-join the M5 northbound at J24.

Drivers are urged to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys, as the closure and resulting traffic disruption are expected to continue throughout the morning.
