MP calls for new water regulator

Ian Roome urges urgent action to address sewage crisis in North Devon

MP calls for new water regulator

Ian Roome, MP for North Devon

Ian Roome, MP for North Devon, is urging the government to replace the current water regulator, Ofwat, following its announcement of a major review of the water industry.

This review, led by the newly formed Independent Water Commission, marks the most comprehensive evaluation of the sector since its privatisation.

The Liberal Democrats have been vocal about the need for immediate action to address the ongoing sewage crisis that continues to impact Britain's coastlines, lakes, and rivers.

In North Devon, Mr Roome stated the situation is particularly concerning, with sewage being discharged near Croyde Bay 27 times last year, totaling 114 hours of pollution.

Local sewage campaigners have welcomed the government’s review, viewing it as a step in the right direction.

Surfers Against Sewage have also expressed support but stress that the review must urgently address the ownership structures of water companies.

They advocate for a focus on delivering high-quality public services instead of prioritising shareholder profits.

Mr Roome stated: “We need far more urgency from the government if we are to stop South West Water polluting our community with foul sewage.

“Whilst a review of the industry is welcome, it should not be used as a tool to kick the can down the road on immediate reforms.

“Even before this Commission begins, the government should be getting on with introducing a new regulator with real teeth and power to get hold of these profiteering firms.”

He added: “Sadly, the government's approach is still a job half done.

“It is time to put an end to profit before the environment in the water industry, and end this national scandal.”
