Bideford College students
Bideford College has announced its support for World Mental Health Day, which took place on October 10.
The annual event, this year focusing on workplace mental health, highlighted the importance of mental wellbeing within professional settings, benefitting both individuals and the wider community.
As part of their involvement, Year 13 students at Bideford College, part of the Athena Learning Trust, welcomed guest speakers from the Torridge Mental Health Team.
Ian Winsor, a Mental Health Nurse, and Daisy Stark, a Trainee Nursing Associate, visited the school to discuss their careers, daily responsibilities, and the mental health services available locally.
The college has said that their curriculum places significant emphasis on both physical health and mental wellbeing, ensuring students leave with a clear understanding of how to express their emotions, the importance of maintaining connections with others, and how to spot early signs of mental health concerns.
Topics such as anxiety, depression, and the role of physical activity in improving mental health are all key areas of focus.
Dr Claire Ankers, Principal of Bideford College and Atlantic Academy, expressed her gratitude for the visit, saying: “I am so grateful to Ian and Daisy for coming along to speak to some of our students about their important work. Their visit helped to make sure that students know all about the support that is available to them and also got them thinking about the different career roles there are connected to mental health in the NHS.”
She added: “World Mental Health Day is a good opportunity for people to check in with each other. It’s not always easy to tell when someone is struggling and at Bideford College we try to create a nurturing environment where students know they can reach out and receive support if they need it.”
Bideford College, rated 'Good' by Ofsted across key areas including quality of education and personal development.
The college has said that Ofsted inspectors noted the following about Bideford College:
Leaders have heightened expectations of pupils and staff.
Learners in the sixth form are strong role models and ambassadors for the school.
