The Wildwood Spa at Ravendere Retreats

Nestled in the woodlands of North Devon, Ravendere Retreats, near Lee, has become a sought-after destination for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.

Simon Hawthorne, who, alongside his wife Julia, manages the retreat from their four-bedroom house on-site, shared the inspiring story behind its development and the unique offerings that make it a standout venue.

Simon relocated from Derbyshire six years ago after being contacted by the family that owns Ravendere.

The retreat was acquired in 2020, following the ownership of Steve and Suzie Baker, who purchased Pickwell Manor 18 years ago.

While family-friendly Pickwell Manor, near Putsborough, was formerly a wedding venue, adults-only Ravendere Retreats features The Treehouse and the luxurious Wildwood Spa, both managed under Pickwell Manor Ltd.

The Wildwood Spa, a highlight of Ravendere Retreats, was envisioned by previous owners, Kieran and Helen Fischer, who bought the property around 2018.

Today, the retreat has over 70,000 Instagram followers, attracting visitors predominantly from the South East.

With a minimum stay of two nights costing £800, the retreat emphasises exclusivity and quality.

It is currently booked up until summer 2025.

Simon said: “The reviews are incredibly positive; we’ve never had a single guest say it’s too expensive.”

Over at Pickwell Manor, the more family-friendly treehouses have been regarded by Simon as some of the best in the country.

These offer an immersive experience in nature, complete with hot tubs and saunas.

Back over at Ravendere Retreats, the self-catering spa allows guests to indulge in treatments at their request such as massages and facials, accompanied by an infinity pool, further enhancing the luxurious experience.

It was even featured on Channel 4's Extraordinary Escapes.

Despite facing challenges from the cost-of-living crisis and rising interest rates, Simon reports that bookings have increased compared to last year, although many guests are opting for shorter stays.

Currently, the family orientated treehouses enjoy an impressive 80 per cent occupancy rate.

Ravendere Retreats is not just a luxury getaway; it is deeply committed to environmental sustainability.

The Pickwell Foundation, which receives all profits from both aspects of the business (Ravendere Retreats and Pickwell Manor), supports refugee rehoming and environmental projects.

This grant-making charity draws its annual funding from the businesses and social investments associated with the retreat.

The foundation supports organisations, charities, and non-profits with small to medium-sized grants, focusing on those working with displaced people and addressing climate change.

Over the past eight years, the foundation's work with displaced people has become a pivotal focus.

They have recruited, trained, and supported 13 groups of volunteers who have welcomed refugee families through the Community Sponsorship Scheme.

Additionally, a dedicated team provides casework and wrap-around support to Ukrainian guests welcomed into North Devon via the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

Last year, they offered volunteer-led support to over 150 asylum seekers at a North Devon hotel through the Dispersal Scheme.

Since October 2023, they have been helping 18 Afghan families rebuild their lives in North Devon, with nine of those families already welcomed.

Simon, who previously ran a charity for ten years, highlights the importance of eco-conscious practices, stating: “We’ve integrated solar energy, with 50 per cent of our electricity sourced from our own solar panels, along with a biomass boiler for heating.”

Guests at the adult-only Wildwood Spa appreciate the tranquillity and natural beauty of the surrounding area, which is only half a mile from local beaches.

He explained that the family-oriented ethos of Pickwell Manor is evident, with features like a games room, tennis courts, and safe play areas for children, making it a perfect destination for families.

It has even been compared as “the best alternative to Centre Parks.”

With plans for another spa in the works due to the success of the Wildwood Spa, Simon and Julia continue to enhance the retreat's offerings while staying true to their commitment to sustainability and community support.

As Simon  said: “Devon speaks for itself; the beauty of it and the family-centred approach we offer truly sets us apart.”
