Bideford College
Two North Devon schools, Bideford College and Atlantic Academy, both part of the Athena Learning Trust, have been recognised for scoring among the highest in the country for their staff workload management.
The recognition is based on national survey data from the 2023/24 academic year, highlighting the schools' efforts in balancing workloads, implementing innovative practices, and prioritising staff wellbeing.
Both schools have been invited to collaborate with Edurio, a leading school survey organisation, to contribute to a guide on best practices for reducing staff workload.
Edurio's surveys collect feedback from students, parents, and staff, providing schools with the ability to compare their performance against national benchmarks.
The recognition comes amid concerns about teacher workload across the country.
According to the NASUWT teaching union, four in five teachers report that their workload and stress have increased, and half say it has negatively impacted their physical and mental health.
Two-thirds of teachers have said they are seriously considering leaving the profession due to concerns about excessive workload.
Bideford College has introduced a strategy aimed at continuous improvement in teaching and learning, with a focus on maintaining a balanced workload for staff.
At Atlantic Academy, efforts have been made to foster positive relationships between staff and students, while ensuring staff feel valued and supported.
Dr Claire Ankers, Principal at both schools, said: “I am delighted that both Atlantic Academy and Bideford College have been recognised as providing a positive staff workload balance. Retaining great teachers is pivotal to ensuring that our students receive a top quality education and it’s only when teachers have room to be creative and thoughtful in their classroom approach that schools truly thrive.”
