Bideford is set to raise a glass as Sham Fest 2024 returns to the Pollyfield Community Centre this weekend, offering a diverse selection of real ales, ciders, gin, rum, live music, and hot food.
Taking place on Friday and Saturday, 20 and 21 September, at Avon Road in East-the-Water, Bideford, the festival will be supporting the East-the-Water Community Food Pantry and other local causes.
Organiser Huw Thomas shared his enthusiasm for this year’s festival: “This is our second year and we're going to have 11 beers from brewers across Devon, plus a couple from Somerset. We've also got our own festival ale - East-the-Water Porter - brewed for the event by Clearwater Brewery, who are based just around the corner.
“There will also be five Devon ciders and we're introducing a gin and rum bar.”
In addition to the selection of beers, festival-goers can enjoy five Devon ciders, along with a newly introduced gin and rum bar for those looking for something different.
The festival runs from 6–11 pm on Friday and 1–11 pm on Saturday.
Admission is free, making it an accessible event for the whole community.
On the music front, Friday night will feature Dixieland jazz from Dixie Faux, followed by eclectic covers performed by Liz B & The Players.
Saturday's lineup includes Flynn Maya, Kayleigh Richardson, and The Gambler, ensuring a lively atmosphere throughout the weekend.
“This event is only possible thanks to the support of donors. Brunswick Wharf is our main sponsor for 2024 but we've also had some generous help from other local businesses and individuals,” Huw added.
While the aim is to raise funds, the focus remains on providing an enjoyable experience for the community.
The primary beneficiary is the East-the-Water Community Food Pantry, a charity committed to helping those in need, especially in combating child food poverty.
Additional donations will support the Pollyfield Centre, a key charity hub for the area.
Last year’s inaugural festival raised over £1,500, and this year the organisers hope to exceed that amount.
Huw concluded: “We are hoping to raise money but we also want to put on an enjoyable event for the local community, with some great beers, laid back music and a happy vibe. Everyone's welcome to come and join us.”
