Devon County Council has announced the launch of a new training programme aimed at enhancing understanding and usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools across Devon, Plymouth, Somerset, and Torbay.

The initiative, part of the Digital Skills Series funded by the Heart of the Southwest Growth Deal, begins this month and is designed to empower individuals and businesses with AI knowledge.

The AI awareness training programme will offer 80 places to participants eager to explore the benefits and opportunities of AI.

The course, delivered by the renowned King’s Institute for AI at King’s College London, is tailored for those with no prior experience in AI.

It covers four key modules: basic concepts, business applications, data literacy, and prompt engineering.

AI technology, known for its ability to enhance productivity and automate repetitive tasks like data entry, scheduling, and content summarisation, promises to streamline operations and free up time for more complex activities.

The training aims to equip participants with the skills to effectively integrate AI into their business operations and develop data-driven strategies.

Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Recovery and Skills, expressed enthusiasm about the programme: We’re excited to announce this AI training programme, which will offer training to a significant number of participants. Following a competitive selection process, King’s Institute for AI (King's College London) will deliver the training, bringing their extensive AI knowledge to our region.”

The programme is open to business organisations and their employees, as well as unemployed individuals residing in the target areas.

Notably, 40 places are reserved for underrepresented groups in the technology sector, including women, Black, Asian, and ethnic minorities, disabled individuals, and those aged 50 and over.

Participants can choose to undertake a minimum of 12 hours of training, with an additional six hours available.

The course includes personalised feedback and one-on-one follow-up sessions to ensure practical and effective learning.

For more information or to register for the AI Awareness Training, interested individuals and businesses should contact Debra Steele at 01392 383000 or via email at Debra.Steele@devon.gov.uk.
