North Devon Hospice fundraising cycle ride

North Devon Hospice fundraising cycle ride

This September, Lee Mason will be taking on an epic cycle in memory of his cousin Jed Mason, who spent his final days wrapped in care at North Devon Hospice. Here, Lee explains the inspiration behind his fundraising challenge…

Last year, my cousin Jed sadly passed away after being diagnosed with cancer.

Being just 52 years old, not only was Jed relatively young but he was also the life and soul of the party and a real character known and loved throughout our North Devon community.

So, when he was diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, this came as a real shock to me and my family.

After Jed’s treatment proved unsuccessful, he was then referred to North Devon Hospice, where he would eventually spend the last few days of his life.

The care he received during this time was second to none and his family was embraced by this amazing charity, which I know made a real difference to them at such a difficult time.

Knowing the impact the hospice had, I wanted to do something in Jed’s memory to help ensure that others in our community get the amazing care he received at a time when it matters most.

That’s why this September, I’m taking on the monumental challenge of cycling from Land’s End to John o’Groats to raise as much money as possible for North Devon Hospice.

Being a keen cyclist, this is the perfect challenge for me.

Not only do I get to enjoy a wonderful experience doing something I love but I’ll also be supporting a brilliant local charity in the process!

My challenge begins on Saturday 7th September, when I’ll start my ride alongside 5 of my work colleagues who are also taking part to raise money for charity.

Over the 9 days, we’ll ride across the country, covering 100-120 miles per day come rain or shine. While there are bound to be some tough moments, I know that the thoughts of Jed and his family will be all the motivation I need to conquer this challenge and get me through to the end.

Since January, I’ve been spending a lot of time on my bike and have cycled over 5,000 miles in preparation for this challenge. I’ve also got a lot fitter, lost weight, and even paused the drinking, which being a construction man, has been the toughest part!

But rest assured at the end of each day, I’ll be having a pint for Jed with a smile on my face, knowing he’d be proud of what I’m doing to support a charity that did so much for him.

If you’d like to support me in my cycling challenge, you can donate to my JustGiving page here: justgiving.com/page/lee-mason-1716358119121.

On behalf of Jed, my family, and all the people cared for at North Devon Hospice, thank you for your brilliant support.
