On Wednesday, August 14, RNLI lifeguards at Woolacombe Beach rescued seven people during a challenging afternoon as strong rip currents developed, making swimming and bodyboarding hazardous.

The incidents began around 4.15pm. when Lead Lifeguard Supervisor Matt Whitley rescued two female swimmers and a male swimmer caught in a rip current.

Just 30 minutes later, he responded again, rescuing another male swimmer and a bodyboarder from similar conditions.

By 5pm, lifeguards noticed bodyboarders struggling to stay within the designated bathing area.

They quickly responded, finding five people in trouble, three of whom managed to escape danger on their own while lifeguards assisted the other two to safety.

All seven were brought to shore, where they were assessed and advised on how to stay safe in the future.

Matt emphasized the importance of staying between the red and yellow flags on lifeguarded beaches, noting: “Conditions can change quickly and RNLI lifeguards are constantly monitoring the water and beaches to make sure people are avoiding risks”

The RNLI’s presence at Woolacombe is supported by Parkin Estates, ensuring that beachgoers have a safe and enjoyable experience.
