Torridge District Council has issued a plea to locals and tourists alike, reminding everyone to do their part this summer to help keep Torridge clean and tidy.
With over 6 million visitors coming to North Devon each year, especially during peak times, effort is required to maintain the cleanliness of towns, villages, coastal areas, and green spaces.
To cope with the influx of visitors at Westward Ho!, the council has added over 15 additional wheelie bins around the village and increased the frequency of bin emptying, particularly after high tide when beachgoers leave their rubbish behind.
Additionally, seasonal part-time staff are employed to ensure the area remains clean and tidy.
Despite these efforts, the council stated that fast-food boxes are often left on the green area, and bodyboards, buckets, and spades can be found abandoned on the slipway.
Beach clean-up initiatives help in combating beach waste and restoring the natural beauty of the coastlines.
The Marine Conservation Society’s annual Beachwatch report reveals that over 60 per cent of all litter collected during beach clean-ups consists of single-use plastic items.
Removing beach litter safeguards marine life, preserves ecosystems, and protects the delicate balance of coastal habitats.
Regular beach clean events are hosted by the Northam Burrows rangers, and information about upcoming events can be found on their social media pages or website at torridge.gov.uk/northamburrows.
Councillor Chris Leather, Lead Member for Operational Services, Torridge District Council, said: “As we approach our busiest time of the year in terms of visitor numbers, we’re asking everyone to make sure they always use the litter bins provided and take any unwanted items home with them. The best way to keep a beach is to keep it nice and tidy as you go along. We all have a responsibility to respect and protect our cherished natural environments. Together, we can make a difference in keeping our local area clean and beautiful.”
By following these simple steps, locals and tourists can contribute to the collective effort to keep Torridge a welcoming and pristine destination for all.
