Peggy Keenor-Crome will be doing the competition later this month
An 81-year-old triathlete from Westward Ho!, is preparing to defend her title at the World Aquathlon Championships in Australia this August.
Competing in the 80-plus female category, Peggy Keenor-Crome, will race in two legs featuring a 1,000m swim and a 5k run.
To cover the costs of flights, insurance, accommodations, and entry fees, Peggy needs around £3,000.
Her journey to the championships has been supported by her local community, who raised nearly £1,500 to help cover some of her travel expenses.
Peggy receives no financial contribution for representing her country in triathlons worldwide.
Back in March, Peggy told the Gazette that she reaches out to those who may feel discouraged by age and unable to participate in athletics.
She encourages them, saying: “Many people underestimate their abilities. I advise starting with a gentle jog and transitioning to power walking when needed. When I faced difficulties, I reassured myself that improvement was possible.”
The fundraising effort was spearheaded by Peggy's close friends, who organised various events, including a craft fair and a crowdfunding campaign, to raise the necessary funds.
Competing in the World Aquathlon Championships requires dedication and rigorous training. Peggy's daily routine includes swimming, running, and strength training, all carefully balanced to ensure peak performance.
Her disciplined approach to fitness and determination have been crucial in maintaining her competitive edge.
Peggy's achievements in triathlons include numerous titles and accolades, making her the most decorated competitor in her age group.
Her participation in the World Aquathlon Championships aims not only to defend her title but also to inspire others to pursue their passions, regardless of age.
As Peggy prepares to fly to Australia, she carries with her the best wishes of her supporters.
The crowdfunding campaign is still open. If anyone would like to donate, please go to Crowdfunder for Peggy.
