A Northam resident has expressed frustration at rubbish and litter and overflowing bins at an allotment site in Northam.

Ingka Charters, who has lived in the area for nearly three decades and visits Burrough Farm allotment with her dog, described the situation as disheartening.

She highlighted issues including litter scattered around the park and bins that have reportedly gone unemptied for more than two weeks.

Ms Charters also pointed out the condition of picnic tables, which she noted are charming but in need of regular maintenance, especially following recent rainy weather that has led to muddy conditions.

She said: “I have watched this little park grow from wasteland meadow to this lovely place to go, but it has not been maintained too well these last two years.”

In response to her concerns, the Gazette reached out to Northam Town Council for a statement.

A council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, this is the first that we have heard about these issues. All bins including dog waste bins are the responsibility of Torridge District Council, I have contacted them and they have been emptied. Other issues will be rectified as quickly as possible.”

The Gazette also contacted Torridge District Council for their perspective on the matter.

A spokesperson said: “The park area of land by the allotments is not Council owned and therefore is not maintained by Torridge District Council.

“The dog bins in this area are usually emptied twice a week.  The bin was emptied on Friday 28 June.  There should have been another collection on Monday 1 July, but unfortunately our normal collector is on long-term sick and their replacement was also unwell last week.  The bin was emptied again on Friday 5 July and again today, Monday 8 July.  We are aware of the situation and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
