Red and Green Masks in Rotary Gardens
After a two-year hiatus, the popular 42 year old Pilton Green Man Day is back on July 20, promising an exciting mix of activities and entertainment.
The event will feature a procession, pageant, children’s activities, music, street market, crafts, food and drink, charity stalls, street entertainers, and the Green Man Bar and Pimms’ Tents.
Pilton’s Green Man Day, part of the historic Pilton Festival, has deep roots dating back to King Edward III, who granted Pilton a charter to hold an annual market.
This market remains a major feature, allowing craftsmen to showcase their work and charity workers to raise funds in a vibrant, festive atmosphere.
The Green Man, an ancient symbol of nature and fertility, became associated with the festival during its revival in 1982. The ritual enacted at Pilton Green Man Day is believed to represent the initial antagonism between the Prior and the Green Man, and the subsequent inclusion of the pagan figure within St. Mary's Church.
At the festival, various food and drink outlets, along with crafts and activities, will be available in Rotary Gardens.
Business and charity stalls will line Pilton Street, with everything open from 10am to 5pm.
Kelly Smith, Deputy Chair of the Pilton Green Man Committee, said: “Pilton’s Green Man Day is one of the most uniquely enjoyable, family-friendly days in North Devon. We look forward to seeing you there again!”
