Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys on the M5 northbound this morning following a serious collision that has resulted in the closure of the motorway between junctions 25 and 24 near Taunton.
The incident occurred around 6.30am when a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) struck a bridge parapet, causing significant disruption.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, and efforts are underway to recover the HGV.
However, before the road can be safely reopened, engineers must inspect the bridge to ensure its structural integrity.
In the meantime, traffic is being diverted via the A38, leading to significant delays.
This diversion is essential to maintain safety but has resulted in congestion as road users adapt to the alternative route.
North Devon drivers approaching the M5 northbound are affected and should prepare for extended travel times.
Traffic is already expected to be higher due to Glastonbury Festival.
Festival-goers and other road users are strongly encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional time for their journeys, or consider seeking alternative routes where possible.
Highways South West has been providing updates and will continue to do so as the situation develops.
