The National Trust is set to support the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) Festival of Archaeology, the UK’s largest annual celebration of archaeology. Running from July 13 to July 28, this year's festival theme is Archaeology and Community, and Arlington Court in North Devon will be a key participant.
Visitors to Arlington Court can immerse themselves in the mediaeval history of the estate. Collaborating with a student from Exeter University, the National Trust has unearthed new information about the mediaeval village that once stood on the grounds before the Chichester family took over nearly 600 years ago.
Throughout the festival, attendees can engage in a variety of activities designed to bring mediaeval Arlington to life.
Martin Papworth, the National Trust South West Archaeologist, said: “The Festival is such a great opportunity for everyone, whatever age, to ignite their imagination and get involved in ancient things. Through archaeology, we can touch the past and make it come to life. Through small things made great with new meaning…a bump in the ground, a fragment of pottery. Come to the National Trust properties taking part and be inspired by what there is to enjoy.”
Other National Trust properties involved will offer a diverse array of activities ranging from guided walks, finds handling, and talks, to hands-on experiences like surveying and excavations.
