Devon County Council has announced plans for drainage replacement works along a nearly 2-kilometre stretch of the B3232, starting next month (July).
The project, set to commence on Monday 1 July, aims to upgrade deteriorating drainage pipes following extensive collapses and joint issues identified during recent surveys.
The repair scheme is anticipated to span approximately seven weeks, with teams scheduled to work extended hours to expedite completion.
To accommodate the necessary repairs, the affected section of the B3232 will undergo phased closures, carefully planned to minimise disruption to residents and businesses in the area.
From Monday 1 July to Friday 26 July, the road will be closed from Newton Cross towards Alverdiscott.
Subsequently, from Monday 29 July to Friday 2 August, closures will be implemented from Prospect Corner to Rooty Cross, and from Newton Cross to Prospect Corner.
Weekend openings will be facilitated wherever feasible for safe passage.
During the closure period, access to The Hunters Inn will be maintained, with specific travel routes outlined to ensure uninterrupted service.
Customers travelling from Barnstaple will have access between Monday 1 July–Sunday 14 July and Saturday 20 July–Friday 26 July, while those approaching from Torrington can access between Monday 15 July–Friday 19 July and Monday 29 July–Friday 2 August.
The decision to undertake repairs during the summer aims to address current drainage challenges, which pose safety risks during winter months and contribute to structural road damage.
The council have said: “To minimise disruption to the local community and businesses, the road closure has been timed to coincide with work being undertaken on the road by South West Water between Monday 15 July and Friday 19 July. A local landowner has also liaised with the County Council over taking advantage of the closure to cut their hedge.”
To facilitate smooth traffic flow, a signed diversion route via B3227, A377, A39, B3232, and vice versa will be in place.
