Ilfracombe man takes on 800-mile cycling challenge to honour friend

Mike Culley is getting ready for the challenge on August 18

A man from Ilfracombe is gearing up for an incredible cycling challenge in memory of his friend.

Mike Culley, aged 83, will undertake a monumental journey starting August 18, cycling from Ilfracombe to Exeter and back seven times over seven consecutive days.

This charitable challenge will cover nearly 800 miles and is dedicated to raising funds for Myeloma UK through his fundraiser titled Ian's Memorial Ride.

The motivation behind Mike's challenge lies in his profound friendship with Ian Jewell who passed away.

He fondly recalls Ian's skills in rugby, running, and swimming, as well as their shared passion for triathlons.

Mike first met Ian in 1983 at the Barnstaple Triathlon, where he was in a team called The Barnstaple All Stars.

Ian later joined Mike’s Triathlon club in 1986, and has been described by Mike as “a man of many talents.”

Having been involved in triathlons since 1983, Mike Culley brings decades of athletic experience to this remarkable undertaking.

The event will kick off at Verity in Ilfracombe and is expected to draw significant community support, with locals volunteering to accompany Mike on various legs of his journey and offering moral support throughout the seven-day challenge.

Speaking of their friendship on his JustGiving page, Mike said: “I worked with Ian for about nine years doing Bikeability in Schools all over North Devon. We never, and I mean never, had a crossed word. In fact, every day we giggled and laughed like two teenagers. His loss has hit me extremely hard.”

On his JustGiving page, Mike said: “This ride is for Him and ALL the poor souls that are suffering from this awful illness.”

For those interested in supporting Mike's journey or learning more about his inspiring story, donations can be made on his JustGiving page.
