Holidaymaker criticises Ilfracombe's waste issues

Concerns raised over town's deteriorating cleanliness and bin overflow

Holidaymaker criticises Ilfracombe's waste issues

A long-time holidaymaker has voiced his disappointment over what he notes as a noticeable decline in Ilfracombe’s waste management services.

John Harrison, who has been holidaying in Ilfracombe twice a year for the past 30 years, shared his concerns with the Gazette, highlighting the worsening state of waste services in the town.

John said: “Really sad to see the decline of such a beautiful town made worse by the decline of waste services, such a basic service. It's a lovely place with nowhere to put your waste except to drop it onto the street. A couple of streets away, small businesses shut off a street to play live bands to encourage people to spend their hard-earned money, but the council’s dereliction of duty is terrible.”

Mr. Harrison's observations are supported by photographs he took on Sunday, June 9, depicting overflowing bins and litter-strewn streets.

In response to Mr Harrison's remarks, the Gazette contacted Ilfracombe Town Council for comment.

The council acknowledged the situation and explained the circumstances that led to the lapse in waste services.

The council said: “Ilfracombe Town Council was made aware of the situation via social media at the time it took place. We immediately contacted North Devon District Council (NDC) and reported it accordingly. Due to an unexpected staffing issue, there was a delay in their regular bin emptying schedule over the weekend. As soon as they became aware of the situation, they addressed it promptly on Sunday. NDC apologises for this and appreciates the community’s understanding.”

The council also provided guidance for residents and visitors on how to report such issues in the future.

They said: “Should members of the public face this situation again there are resources they can use to ensure we report things as soon as they happen. To report an overflowing litter bin via the NDC website please click on link https://my.northdevon.gov.uk/MyServices. In addition Ilfracombe Town Council has set up a Report It! system where we can report it on behalf of the public.  More information can be found at the following link https://ilfracombetowncouncil.gov.uk/ilfracombe-report-it/
