The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms set to hit parts of North Devon on Tuesday, May 21, potentially causing travel disruption and surface water flooding.

The warning is in place from 12pm to 9pm.

Residents and travellers in the affected areas are advised to be prepared for adverse weather conditions, as thunderstorms are likely to develop during the afternoon, persisting for approximately nine hours.

The warnings given by the Met Office include a range of potential impacts, including difficult driving conditions, road closures, delays to transportation services, and the possibility of power cuts.

The Met Office's warning outlines what individuals should expect:

  • Spray and Sudden Flooding: Motorists should anticipate difficult driving conditions due to spray and sudden flooding, which could lead to road closures. Travellers are advised to exercise caution and consider alternative routes if necessary.

  • Transport Disruptions: The occurrence of flooding or lightning strikes may result in delays and potential cancellations to both train and bus services. Passengers are advised to check for updates from transportation providers and plan their journeys accordingly.

  • Risk of Power Cuts: There is a slight chance of power cuts occurring in some areas, potentially affecting homes and businesses. Additionally, other essential services may be temporarily disrupted, requiring individuals to prepare accordingly.

  • Potential Property Damage: There is a small chance of rapid flooding to homes and businesses, posing a risk of damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their properties and belongings.

Given the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms, residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.
