In a bid to empower women and young girls in North Devon, a Bideford-based Clinical Psychologist, has launched the Warrior Women Project.

Led by Dr George Capone, this Community Interest Company aims to promote personal growth and community bonding through non-contact boxing sessions.

The project, titled Find Your Inner Warrior, stems from Dr Capone's personal journey of self-discovery and her professional expertise in psychology.

Drawing from her experiences in movement and boxing, she saw an opportunity to merge physical activity with psychological principles to empower women.

The workshops, set to kick off on May 31 at Barnstaple ABC boxing club, offer participants a chance to engage in non-contact boxing sessions.

These sessions are designed not only to enhance physical fitness but also to promote mental well-being, confidence, and stress relief.

Dr Capone's unique approach combines boxing coaching with psychological insights, creating a safe space for women to reconnect with their bodies and foster a sense of empowerment.

Through guided exercises and community support, participants can expect to build social connections, boost confidence, and improve overall mental well-being.

With a focus on accessibility, the workshops are priced at £5 per session.

Additionally, Dr Capone plans to expand the program to other communities in Devon, with potential partnerships and grant funding on the horizon.

Reflecting on her own journey, Dr Capone said: “Through my own personal journey of movement, really, I've done all sorts of stuff in the past, dance, different kinds of sports. I've always been, I've been to the gym but I started boxing last year and it just really spoke to me.”

She further elaborated on the workshop's objectives, saying: “Generally, I guess what we're looking for is to help people build more like social connections and community to help increase their sense of confidence as well as the connection to body in general stress relief and improvement in mental well being.”

Dr Capone discusses the fusion of her backgrounds, and said: “What led me to merge my background really as a clinical psychologist with the boxing coaching is partly kind of started from the transformation that I've witnessed at work, where I get people moving around in a room for me sitting face to face someone like at a table. It just felt a bit dry.

“There's definitely plans to expand further afield. I'm starting at North Devon but actually, in communication with another boxing group... I'm looking to potentially network with them and expand to other areas.”

Dr Capone explained that the workshops are a six week programme.

For those interested in joining the Warrior Women Project, bookings can be made through their website or by attending a session at the designated venues.
