A Bideford man has been bestowed with a prestigious honour for his invaluable volunteer work with the Bideford Blues and Appledore Junior Football Club.

This recognition culminated in an unforgettable trip for Alan McKenzie to the revered training ground of the England National Football Team, St. George's Park, where Alan had the rare opportunity to rub shoulders with players and meet the esteemed manager, Gareth Southgate.

At 73 years old, Alan McKenzie's commitment to grassroots football has been nothing short of remarkable.

Retiring from his professional work, he redirected his passion towards creating optimal playing conditions for young football enthusiasts in his community.

As the dedicated groundsman for Bideford Blues and Appledore Junior Football Club, Alan's diligent efforts have not only transformed the quality of the pitches but have also paved the way for numerous local teams to thrive in the sport they love.

He even has a soft spot for Leeds United Football Club.

Speaking of his time at St George’s Park, Alan said: “It was tremendous. It was such a special, special experience honestly. Sport played a big part in my life growing up, and that's the reason why I'm doing what I'm doing now.”

Throughout his tenure as a volunteer, Alan has witnessed countless memorable moments, from hosting successful cup finals to seeing young players grow into confident individuals. His commitment extends beyond the pitch, as he often finds himself coaching and refereeing matches on weekends, ensuring that the next generation of footballers receives the support they need to thrive.

When asked about his favourite part of the day at St. George's Park, Alan said: “Talking to the other ambassadors, volunteers and just relating to what they do and what I do, it was very humbling.”

He continued: “And meeting Gareth Southgate was most engaging. He took the time to talk to you and listen to you. He came across very well.”

Reflecting on his selection for the trip, Alan expressed initial hesitation, acknowledging the many deserving volunteers within his club.

However, he ultimately embraced the opportunity to represent his community and shine a spotlight on the vital work being done at the grassroots level.

He said: “You know, so many people that I can name that all do different jobs, you know, Secretary Treasurer, Chairman, fundraisers, to helping in the kitchen, and I just didn't want to be singled out, as you know, because they're all tremendous!”

Beyond his own involvement, Alan's family is deeply ingrained in the world of sports.

His grandsons, Ollie Haste and Finley Haste, are rising stars in their respective fields.

Ollie shines on the football pitch, proudly playing for Yeovil Town Football Club, while Finley showcases his talent both on the college field and with Yeovil under-18s.

Not to be outdone, Alan's granddaughter leads by example as the captain of the under-18s Bideford Rugby Club, embodying the family's passion for sportsmanship and teamwork.
