Fremington Women Football Club has clinched the Graddon Vending Devon Women's Senior Cup cup after a thrilling 2-1 victory against Budleigh Salterton Ladies Football Club.
The match, held at Coach Road in Newton Abbot on April 5 at 7.15pm , saw Fremington Women's Beth Evans and Amy Slaney scoring the crucial goals that secured the win.
Under the guidance of Head Coach, Mark Rostock and Deputy Coach and player Jodie Dixon, the team faced formidable opponents in Budleigh Salterton.
However, Fremington Women proved themselves equal to the challenge.
Reflecting on their hard-fought victory, Jodie said: "It was a tough battle, but we pulled through."
Recognising the challenge of facing Budleigh Salterton, who were near the top of the league, Jodie shared the need for maximum effort from Fremington Women, who currently sit at the bottom of the league.
The victory, however, came at a cost.
Jodie revealed that she suspects having broken a rib during the game, and several other players sustained injuries amidst the competition.
Following their hard-won victory, the team celebrated in Newton Abbot, but their focus quickly turned to the challenges ahead.
Speaking of the match, Jodie said: “ I am just so proud of the team!”
With upcoming matches looming, the team is already planning for the remaining season, mindful of the physical and strategic demands.
However, beyond the pitch, the team embodies a diverse range of professions, including teachers, plumbers, and college students.
The team comprises players spanning from 16 to 56 years old
Following the match, the team celebrated in Newton Abbot, with plans for a more formal celebration at the season's end due to upcoming tough games.
In addition to their competitive matches, the team engages with the community through Friday fun clubs at Pilton School at 7-8pm on the 3G pitch, promoting socialisation and fitness for all.
Jodie said: “You can even come if you don’t know how to play football.”
With matches scheduled on Sundays and midweek, often requiring travel to distant locations like Plymouth and Torbay, Fremington Women face logistical challenges.
Looking ahead, the team outlined plans for fundraising and seeking sponsorships to support their extensive travel requirements.
These efforts aim to ensure the team's continued success both on and off the field.
