The work is due to start this April

Residents and businesses in South Molton are set to witness the commencement of significant gas network upgrades in the New Road area, starting from early this April.

Wales & West Utilities, the gas emergency and pipeline service provider, will initiate the project on April 2, with an anticipated completion date set for September 2024, pending any unforeseen engineering challenges.

The work encompasses the upgrade of over 3,100 metres of gas pipes, crucial for ensuring the safe and reliable supply of gas to local premises, thereby securing warmth for generations to come.

In preparation for the project, Wales & West Utilities has said they have collaborated closely with Devon County Council to strategise traffic management measures.

Consequently, motorists can expect road closures, traffic lights, and comprehensive signage to alert them well in advance.

Furthermore, local businesses have been informed of the impending works to mitigate any potential disruptions.

Roxanne Whittaker, overseeing the gas pipe upgrade work at Wales & West Utilities, said: "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum."

She continued: "Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.”

Furthermore, Ms Whittaker underscored the broader implications of the upgrades and said: "This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future."
