Devon writers' new book explores wild swimming in North Devon

Through a love of exploration and wild swimming, friends Sophie and Matt have created their new book with a focus on North Devon and Exmoor

Matt Newbury and Sophie Pierce formed a friendship over their love of exploration and wild swimming

A Devon-based writer known for her passion for wild swimming and exploration, is poised to release her fifth book, Wild Swimming Walks Exmoor and North Devon, on April 1.

Co-authored with her friend Matt Newbury, the book offers readers an immersive guide to the natural wonders of North Devon's landscapes.

Sophie Pierce, who spent over two decades as a journalist for the BBC, found herself drawn to nature's embrace and the allure of outdoor exploration.

Sophie's venture into writing guides started while she was still at the BBC.

It all began with her friendship with Matt and their mutual love for outdoor swimming and exploration.

"None of it was planned," she recalled.

Their first book came about after exploring Torbay together, which later turned into a published work after a talk they gave.

Eventually, they connected with a publisher who has since helped bring their books to readers.

"The love of the outdoors inspired myself and my friend Matt to write the book," Sophie said.

Sophie, who resides near Dartmoor, has said that she has been wild swimming her whole life.

"I moved to Devon in 1999 and found myself surrounded by simple choices and beautiful coastlines," she explained.

"Wild swimming became an integral part of my life."

In addition to her guidebooks, Sophie has written a memoir titled The Green Hill, where she chronicles her journey through grief following the sudden loss of her son Felix.

"Through heartfelt letters written during walks and swims near Felix's resting place, I found solace amidst the landscape of loss," she said.

The upcoming book, Wild Swimming Walks Exmoor and North Devon, has promised to be a great resource for nature enthusiasts, offering detailed descriptions of 28 circular walks, each with opportunities for wild swimming in the sea, rivers, or lakes.

Sophie said: "Each chapter contains wonderful photos and descriptive texts, along with practical information such as maps, directions, and nearby amenities."

Speaking on the new book, Matt said: ““The coast of North Devon is endlessly fascinating, with some amazing geology and history. It is so varied and interesting and a place of great contrasts: you’ve got everything from vast beaches like Crow Point near Braunton, to more intimate coves like Mouthmill, near Clovelly, which is home to a stunning natural arch, Blackchurch Rock.”

"We've got various gigs throughout the month," she shared.

"I hope our work inspires others to immerse themselves in the beauty and serenity of Devon's landscapes," Sophie concluded.

Looking ahead, the pair have a couple of ideas in mind.

While they would love to write another book, they have acknowledged the geographical limitations of their current focus areas.

However, they are considering the possibility of creating a guide to accessible swimming spots in the southwest.

Recognising the increasing interest among individuals with disabilities in the benefits of wild swimming, they envision a resource that highlights places where parking near the water and accessibility features like ramps are available.

Sophie has shared the book will be available in all book shops.
