Barnstaple police have launched a comprehensive operation aimed at addressing pressing community concerns, including speeding, drug-related issues, and antisocial behaviour.

Led by Inspector Andy Wills, the Neighbourhood Team has stepped up patrols and engagement efforts to tackle these issues head-on.

Barnstaple officers recently sent out a survey to get opinions from the public.

The results revealed that speeding is the top concern.

As a result, officers will be stepping up checks and enforcement to address this issue.

They'll also keep the community informed about police efforts concerning the misuse and distribution of controlled substances.

Moreover, they'll be visibly present to address worries about street violence and disruptive behaviour.

To tackle these issues, the police will employ various strategies including dispersal powers, prosecution, increased foot patrols, and collaboration with licensed traders associated with the evening and night-time economy.

The operation, which began on March 18, is slated to span several weeks, with a strong emphasis on responding to feedback gathered from the local community. Inspector Wills said: "We’ve spent the past month reaching out to Barnstaple residents both online and through face-to-face engagements to understand which issues are of greatest concern to them."

He added: "The survey results have been really interesting - some matters raised are those which are managed by other agencies.”

“We will share information and look to work under our existing partnership to respond to these issues collectively."

Inspector Wills stated that residents and visitors should anticipate heightened police presence and activity aimed at addressing nuisance and criminal behaviour.

This information will be communicated through Devon and Cornwall Police’s social media channels.

Additionally, extra police resources, such as the Force Support Group, Protect and Disrupt Team, passive drugs dog, and Roads Policing Team, have been secured to assist the local Neighbourhood Police Team during this period.
