A North Devon resident is calling for action after the underpass near Barnstaple’s Whiddon Valley Tesco store was left flooded for four days.
Gail Brennan, who encountered the flooded underpass, has been vocal about the issue, stressing the need for immediate action due to the deterioration of the road.
She felt “annoyed and concerned for the vulnerable people that had to cross the busy road.”
Having contacted both Devon Highways and Tesco regarding the matter, Mrs Brennan was met with a frustrating response and she said each party pointed fingers at the other, claiming they were responsible.
Fearing for the safety of pedestrians attempting to cross the busy road, Mrs Brennan explained the urgency of investigating the situation and finding a solution.
In response to inquiries made by the Gazette, Tesco clarified that the underpass falls outside its site boundary, saying responsibility was with the relevant highway authorities.
Subsequently, the Gazette reached out to Devon County Council, which is responsible for maintaining the highways.
A spokesperson from Devon County Council (DCC) acknowledged the issue and assured that measures are being taken to address it.
They stated, “We are aware of the issue and we are working with Tesco to get it resolved.”
