The Bideford masterplan
The approval of plans for the construction of 200 new homes on the outskirts of Bideford has stirred controversy, obtaining negative reactions from local residents.
The development, spearheaded by Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon, has aimed to address housing needs while creating a vibrant community space.
The developers will build one to four-bedroom homes at Atlantic Park, off Clovelly Road, on Bideford's western outskirts.
The project has aimed to create both housing and community spaces, including 1.4 hectares of open areas with parks, sports grounds, a community orchard, and play areas for children. Furthermore, a new cycleway and footpath will improve neighbourhood connectivity.
However, concerns over environmental impact, strain on local infrastructure and changing landscape have been raised by residents, who took to social media platforms like Facebook to voice their opposition, with comments reflecting a sense of loss and frustration.
One resident said: "This just breaks my heart. I've lived here all my life, never have I seen my place of birth look like a sprawling eyesore!"
Others raised concerns about the loss of green spaces and the potential strain on already stretched public services such as roads, healthcare and education.
In response, Persimmon Homes defended the project and highlighted its commitment to affordable housing and community development.
A spokesperson said the inclusion of social housing provision and substantial investment in local infrastructure, including amenities such as parks, sports grounds and play areas would benefit the community.
They also stressed the cost-effective construction methods and the potential for job creation and increased tax revenue for the local authority.
The spokesperson said: "We have permission to build 200 homes on the edge of Bideford, 19 per cent of which will be transferred to a local housing association partner for the purposes of social housing provision for local people," stated a representative from Persimmon Homes.
"Our commitment extends beyond mere construction - we are dedicated to creating a thriving community that meets the diverse needs of its residents, with a mix of housing tenures and sizes, helping alleviate pressure on Torridge's housing list while fostering a sense of place.”
The developer outlined funding plans, which include a significant investment in local infrastructure and services. Persimmon Homes has said it will contribute:
"The scheme will inject over a million pounds into the local community, funding enhancements to services and infrastructure," added the Persimmon Homes spokesperson.
"We also take great pride in the sustainable features of the site, which include bolstering biodiversity and green spaces, introducing an eco-friendly drainage system, and establishing appealing play areas," they continued.
Persimmon told the Gazette it wants to start building the new houses as soon as possible, aiming to begin work sometime in March.
