For forty years, The Winkleigh Singers have been the heart of North Devon's singing scene, delighting audiences with their voices and love for music.

Now, as they mark their anniversary, they're embarking on an exciting project: creating a special song to celebrate.

The new song will be premiered on Saturday, December 14 at Great Torrington Parish Church.

Founded by Roland Smith, they've grown over the years, sharing their love of singing near and far.

They've teamed up with composer Dr. Alison Willis, known for her great music with other groups like the BBC Singers.

Together, they're crafting a unique song that blends the choir's history with Dr. Willis's ideas, promising a special experience for listeners.

Alongside their new piece, they're also bringing back the Landkey Carols, beloved songs from Landkey village, to share with a wider audience.

Alison said, “It was lovely to meet the choir who produce a wonderful sound. I am really excited to be working with them on this project which combines ancient local words with new melodies. I hope it will prove to be a piece that other local choirs will want to sing to bring the Landkey Carols to a wider audience.”

But making this dream a reality isn't easy for them.

They're raising money through a GoFundMe page, asking for support from the community. Despite the challenges, they're determined to make it happen.

With Dr. Alison Willis's help, they're ready to captivate audiences once again with their timeless melodies and passion for singing.

Roland Smith said, “We are delighted that Alison has agreed to write a piece for us to celebrate forty years of music making in North Devon. She has worked with many well known musicians, including the BBC Singers, The Sixteen, The Gesualdo Six and the BBC Concert Orchestra, and we are very lucky to have her working with us.”

Plus, at the premiere, they'll showcase both the new and traditional versions of the Landkey Carols, offering a charming contrast of old and new.

The Winkleigh Singers, a small choir from North and Mid-Devon, usually hold three concerts a year, featuring a variety of music from different times and places.

These concerts occur at Christmas, spring and summer.

The choir is always on the lookout for new singers, especially tenors and basses.

They offer a three week free trial where members can see if you like each other and vice versa.
