In a bid to save the ancient Wollemi pine species from extinction, RHS Garden Rosemoor has been selected as a key player in a worldwide conservation effort.

The Wollemi pine, often dubbed the 'dinosaur tree' due to its ancient origins dating back 200 million years, was discovered by chance in Australia in 1994.

But with fewer than 100 trees left in the wild and threats like wildfires looming, urgent action is needed to preserve this iconic species.

Because of this, saplings have now been distributed to botanic gardens worldwide, including RHS Rosemoor, as part of a global initiative to safeguard their future.

Thanks to recent scientific breakthroughs, experts have been able to grow genetically diverse Wollemi pines in controlled environments.

6 of the 170 young Wollemi pines, carefully nurtured in Sydney, Australia, have made their way to RHS Rosemoor.

Upon arrival, they were carefully nurtured at Forestry England’s tree nursery at Bedgebury until they were ready to be planted in their new homes.

After completing their quarantine period, these young trees were safely transferred to RHS Rosemoor.

They have now found a new home on the woodland bank along the northern border of the RHS garden.
