In October 2018, our world came crashing down when my father Eric Nicholls was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

A man of strength and stoicism, dad's diagnosis sent shockwaves through our close-knit family. Little did we know that North Devon Hospice would soon become our lifeline during this trying journey.

I remember it being a cold winter’s day when we received the grim prognosis - three months to live, with no hope of a cure. The impact was seismic.

As a family, we rallied together, doing our best to provide support and care, but we soon realised that dad's chronic anxiety demanded more than our love and presence alone could offer.

This is when North Devon Hospice stepped in - a beacon of compassion, resilience, and kindness in our darkest hour.

They helped us navigate the labyrinth of pain management, offering dad critical support and allowing mum to step into the role of caregiver.

The pressure on her was immense as she administered high-potency pills, bathed him and cuddled him with love during moments of emotional turbulence but lessened with the invaluable guidance from dad’s hospice nurse.

Alongside these home visits, the hospice itself became a sanctuary for dad, a place where he could share his anger, sadness and envy of others' long lives without fear of judgment. His journey was met with the utmost compassion and dignity and it extended to our entire family.

As the days passed, the hospice continued to be a source of support. They offered mindfulness sessions, Reiki, and reflexology to dad, giving him moments of respite and serenity.

The hospice gardens became a place for quiet reflection and of course, a place for our family to savour their delicious English breakfasts—a small pleasure amid the turmoil of illness.

But it wasn't just medical care and therapy; the hospice offered something more profound. They provided a pathway for dad to walk on his last journey, accompanied and not alone.

Their kindness, sincerity, and compassion shone through in every interaction, earning them the title of ‘little angels’ in my mother's eyes, "sent to keep my father company and hold his hand on this last journey."

When December arrived, we faced the challenge of celebrating my parents’ golden wedding anniversary, originally planned for a romantic trip to Amalfi.

Cancer had disrupted our plans, but once again, the hospice stepped in and offered a beautiful room known as ‘The Retreat’ for a heartfelt Vow Renewal ceremony.

Surrounded by loved ones and hospice staff, mum and dad reaffirmed their love for each other, creating a cherished memory.

In February 2023, dad's journey came to an end and we were all privileged to be with him when he passed into heaven. The hospice handled the practical aspects of care, allowing us to focus solely on being with dad during his final moments.

He left this world knowing that we were together and strong as a family, honouring his dying wish.

Since dad's passing, we've been actively involved in fundraising for North Devon Hospice, recognising the importance of their vital services.

We made our own donation in Eric Nicholls' name, a small token of our gratitude for the exceptional care he received.

However, we wanted to do more - to raise awareness within the community and encourage others to get involved.

Whether it's taking part in a fundraising event, volunteering in their gardens, or enjoying a meal at their Terrace Café, every contribution supports someone like dad in finding dignity and grace during their final days.

For those on a similar journey with cancer, whether as a patient or a family member, the hospice is there for you, offering a wide range of services and unwavering support.

And if you're considering a fundraising event for work or volunteering, consider the hospice as a place to make your donation. They are the embodiment of compassion, and their impact on our family's life is immeasurable.

In the memory of dad and the countless others who have found solace and care at North Devon Hospice, I take comfort in knowing that others continue to support this invaluable organisation, ensuring they can be there for families like ours, providing comfort and love during the most challenging moments.

Eric Nicholls may be gone, but his legacy lives on through our family's unity and love, inspired by North Devon Hospice's unwavering and loving support.
