The plan will assist farmers with submitting planning applications and understanding permitted development regulations

Farmers in North Devon are set to benefit from new guidance aimed at simplifying the planning process for agricultural businesses.

North Devon and Torridge district councils have collaborated to produce the Planning Advice for Farmers document, designed to assist farmers with submitting planning applications and understanding permitted development regulations.

The comprehensive guidance covers a range of topics relevant to farmers, including the requirements for planning applications related to new farm buildings, slurry storage, and engineering operations.

It also provides insight into the planning considerations for diversifying agricultural businesses, such as renewable energy projects, building conversions, and tourism development.

Developed in consultation with North Devon Plus, the National Farmers Union, and local farmers across North Devon, the guidance aims to address the challenges faced by the agricultural industry in navigating the planning system.

While the document does not constitute formal planning policy, it serves as a valuable resource to help farmers understand the planning requirements and procedures.

Councillor Malcolm Prowse, Lead Member for Economic Development and Strategic Planning Policy at North Devon Council, underscored the importance of supporting local farmers through the planning process.

He stated, "We know the planning system is not always the easiest to navigate, and with changes to how farm subsidy payments are received, we felt it would be useful...to produce guidance for our local agricultural industry to make it that bit easier for those looking to adapt, expand, or diversify their business."

Councillor Rosemary Lock, Lead Member for Planning at Torridge District Council, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the collaborative effort with the farming community and the National Farmers Union.

She expressed hope that the guidance would streamline the planning process for farming businesses, enabling them to respond effectively to market challenges and opportunities.

The Planning Advice for Farmers guidance document is now available to assist farmers in North Devon.
