In a move to tackle water conservation, climate change and environmental sustainability, South West Water has launched the ambitious Water is Precious campaign.
The initiative is designed to not only raise awareness about the natural value of water but also actively engage customers in promoting water efficiency, reducing bills and contributing to the preservation of the region's ecosystems.
As part of this commitment to transparency and fairness, South West Water set up a tariff trial on February 1. This trial is set to benefit all household customers in Cornwall, who stand to receive bill credits if they achieve specified reductions in water consumption.
A £30 credit awaits customers if Cornwall collectively reduces water usage by 10 per cent, while a £10 credit is in place for a five per cent reduction by April 30.
Recognising the challenges posed by climate change in reliably capturing and storing water, South West Water has made an investment of £125 million.
This funding will be dedicated to a series of innovative projects, including the repurposing of disused quarries, introducing cutting-edge desalination technology to Cornwall for the first time and intensifying efforts to detect and fix leaks.
The goal is to boost the region's water resources significantly.
By 2025, Cornwall is projected to benefit from a resource boost of approximately 45 per cent, while Devon is expected to experience a 30 per cent increase.
Laura Flowerdew, South West Water’s chief customer and digital officer, stressed the importance of balancing the critical task of water extraction with minimising adverse effects on local ecosystems and landscapes.
She said: "Reducing water consumption is not merely a seasonal concern; it's a year-round imperative.
“Through the Water is Precious campaign, we aim to foster positive changes that resonate with customers, encouraging them to conserve water, save money, and play an active role in safeguarding the beauty of the environment we all hold dear."
Looking forward, South West Water's 2025-2030 Business Plan has placed a strategic emphasis on introducing innovative and equitable tariffs.
Responding to customer demands for fairer billing structures, Ms Flowerdew expressed the company's commitment to engaging with customers, communities, and stakeholders.
She said: "Our ongoing dialogue aims to understand what our customers consider fair ways of charging, and we are dedicated to incorporating this feedback into improved billing practices."
South West Water encourages active participation in the Water is Precious campaign, emphasising that small changes in water usage can collectively make a substantial impact on both bills and the environment.
The company remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a sustainable and responsible approach to water management in the region.
