The programme is designed to empower enthusiastic young individuals working towards the betterment of nature, community, and the planet
Plastic Free North Devon (PFND), a local environmental charity, has announced an AVIVA Community Fund crowdfunder to boost their transformative Ocean Explorer Academy.
The programme, designed to empower enthusiastic young individuals working towards the betterment of nature, community, and the planet, has benefited from the community's support.
Plastic Free North Devon, a registered charity, is committed to community-led action to protect and improve the environment. Through partnerships with local communities, businesses, and organisations, PFND has aimed to tackle plastic pollution, reconnect people with nature, and drive sustainable behaviour change for a healthier relationship with the natural world.
The Ocean Explorer Academy provides a holistic experience for selected pupils from local secondary schools, immersing them in outdoor learning through activities like insect surveys, rock pool investigations, and fungi identification. This hands-on approach not only contributes to practical conservation efforts but also educates the young participants about potential career pathways in conservation roles.
PFND's Education Coordinator expressed the importance of the crowdfunder, stating, “Any funds raised through our AVIVA crowdfunder paid for delivery of sessions and much-wanted broadening of the programme's content and reach. We wanted to engage more young people, empowering a connected community of positive change-makers."
Donations to the AVIVA crowdfunder were doubled, aiding in the expansion of the Ocean Explorer Academy's impact. Claire Moodie, PFND CEO, highlighted the transformative potential of additional funds, especially alongside the recent support from various sources, including the North Devon Coast National Landscapes, The Swire Charitable Trust, and the loan of a minibus from Parkdean Resorts.
Businesses contributing £250 or more were recognized as PFND Business Supporters, receiving a Business Supporter Logo 2024 and opportunities for visibility across PFND communications platforms. Donors over £20 were eligible for exciting rewards, while those donating £50 could nominate a primary school for a free school assembly.
The crowdfunding campaign was open until March 8, 2024, and contributions could be made at https://www.avivacomm
