Flourishing Barnstaple revives tradition with 'Carnival!' extravaganza

The project aims to establish a sustainable and lively carnival experience

Carnival Barnstaple

Throughout the week, the event will offer a series of free workshops

In an ambitious bid to breathe new life into the age-old tradition of Barnstaple Carnival, the Flourishing Barnstaple project is taking the helm to transform this year's event into a vibrant, community-driven spectacle.

Pioneering the cultural rejuvenation of Barnstaple, the project aims to establish a sustainable and lively carnival experience.

Commencing on Tuesday, 13 February, and extending through Saturday, 17 February, 'Carnival!' will unfold at the iconic Barnstaple Pannier Market, perfectly timed to coincide with the half-term holidays.

At the core of this revitalisation is a captivating exhibition showcasing large-scale photographs that encapsulate the spirit of past carnivals both in Barnstaple and across the globe.

The festivities kick off with Mardi Gras taking centre stage. The market and Butcher’s Row will transform into a family fun haven, featuring live music, face-painting, crafts, circus activities, and mesmerising magic.

It's a day curated for families to unite and immerse themselves in the joyous traditions of carnival revelry.

Throughout the week, 'Carnival!' will offer a series of free workshops, adding a creative touch to the celebration. From drumming and dance to circus skills and carnival crafts, these workshops provide a unique opportunity for individuals to explore and contribute to this year’s carnival. Participation will be on a first-come-first-served basis due to limited capacity.

Expressing enthusiasm for the carnival renaissance, Councillor Ian Roome, Leader of North Devon Council, encourages everyone to partake in the festivities and support local traders. He said, "This is a community celebration, and all are invited to participate in the fun - and the best part, it's all free!"

Flourishing Barnstaple has extended an open invitation to the community to share ideas and actively engage in the organisation of the carnival during these events.

The realisation of 'Carnival!' is made possible through support from the Cultural Development Fund, administered by Arts Council England, on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport.
