As chilly temperatures and wintry conditions persist across many parts of the UK, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is issuing a set of 15 crucial tips to safeguard the well-being of animals during this cold spell.

With Met Office warnings echoing in various regions, the RSPCA is calling on the public to play their part in ensuring the safety and happiness of pets, livestock, and wildlife.

The animal welfare charity has emphasised the importance of addressing specific winter-related risks, such as antifreeze toxicity and hazards associated with rock salt.

RSPCA pet welfare specialist Dr. Sam Gaines stressed the significance of assisting animals during harsh weather, stating, “It’s really important we help our animal friends during this bitterly cold weather. We’re encouraging people to join the rescue to help animals so we’re sharing our helpful advice and tips available for people to make sure their own animals, and local wildlife, are kept safe.”

Here are the RSPCA’s top tips for winter animal care:

1. For outdoor pets like rabbits and guinea pigs, consider moving them indoors when temperatures drop below freezing. Provide ample bedding and protect their living space from adverse weather.

2. Ensure cats have constant access to a warm indoor area and their bedding is warm, dry, and away from drafts.

3. Beware of antifreeze and rock salt, as they can be poisonous to pets. Store these products out of reach, and consult a vet if ingestion is suspected.

4. Dry wet or cold pets with a towel, and provide warm bedding.

5. Elderly or sickly dogs may benefit from special coats or jumpers during walks. Ensure a comfortable fit allowing normal behaviour.

6. When walking dogs or riding horses in the dark, use reflective clothing for visibility.

7. Keep pets away from frozen bodies of water, preventing danger, and ensuring paws don’t get impacted with snow.

8. Provide extra care for pet birds, including additional bedding, food, and protection from the cold.

9. Avoid housing animals, including birds, in greenhouses and conservatories.

10. Monitor fish ponds daily, ensuring the surface isn’t entirely frozen. Use caution with hot water to create openings, avoiding harm to fish.

11. Horses and livestock need additional care, including shelter, extra feed, and regular checks on water troughs.

12. Aid wildlife by leaving out extra food for birds during winter months.

13. Keep bird baths ice-free and provide clean water and feeders.

14. Check wood or leaf piles for wild animals before lighting fires or bonfires.

15. RSPCA discourages keeping dogs outside in extreme weather, emphasizing the importance of a clean, comfortable, and dry sleeping area with a safe heat source.
