The goal is to make Shakespeare accessible and enjoyable for all
Young actors at Braunton Academy are set to mesmerise audiences this February with a three-night run of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
Running from Wednesday to Friday, February 7 to 9 at the school's Issac Hall, the goal of the show is to make Shakespeare accessible and enjoyable for all.
Breaking away from convention, the students, led by head of drama Rob Carroll, have crafted a fast-paced, minimalist interpretation that thrusts the play's timeless themes into the forefront.
Addressing contemporary political parallels, the production engages in meaningful discussions about leadership, ambition, and the choices leaders make in the pursuit of power. Despite the play's historic origins, the heady mix of drama and relevance promises to captivate audiences of all ages.
What sets this production apart is not only the talent of the young thespians but also the collaboration with GCSE music students.
Head of music, Mr Street, shared insight into the original score composed by the students, drawing inspiration from 20th-century classics to contemporary film composers. Works such as Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring right up to more contemporary film/TV composers such as John Carpenter, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein are set to be featured.
He said: "it is proving to be an exciting piece of music involving moments of great tension and edge-of-seat suspense. The music is having a real impact in terms of helping students understand the emotions and situations the characters are faced with."
This live musical accompaniment promises to heighten the emotional impact of Macbeth's gripping narrative.
Rob Carroll, the Head of Drama at the academy has highlighted the students' dedication and the transformative power of rehearsals, turning daunting challenges into exhilarating accomplishments.
The goal is to make Shakespeare accessible and enjoyable for all, breaking the stereotype of the Bard as a relic of the past.
Whether you're a Shakespeare enthusiast or someone looking to rediscover the magic of his works, Braunton Academy's Macbeth on February 7, 8, and 9 at Isaac Hall is not to be missed.
Come and support these talented young minds as they bring Shakespeare into the 21st century with flair and innovation.
Doors open 6.30pm each night for a start of 7pm. Tickets available through ParentMail or card payment at the door.
