In a proactive move to enhance bicycle security and engage with the local community, police officers in South Molton are offering a free bike marking event on Thursday, January 25.
The initiative aims to provide cyclists with added protection against potential thefts.
Taking place at the South Molton Pannier Market in Broad Street, South Molton, officers will be available from 9am to 1pm to security mark bicycles for interested participants.
The event conveniently aligns with the town's regular market day, and officers hope to see a strong turnout from local residents.
The event coincides with National Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action, which has encouraged public engagement and the visibility of local police teams across the UK.
Sergeant Robert Brown, Neighbourhood Team Leader for South Molton, expressed gratitude to the South Molton Town Council for providing space in their award-winning market.
Sergeant Brown has motivated locals to come forward, get their bikes marked, and engage with officers about any queries they may have.
The bike marking initiative is funded by a donation from the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA), with the South Molton Volunteer Bureau successfully bidding for and being awarded £1,506. The marking kits enable bikes to be traced back to their owners in the event of theft.
Highlighting the importance of crime prevention, especially during the time when many received new bikes as gifts over the festive period, Sergeant Brown has emphasised the role of community engagement in enhancing overall safety.
Cyclists are encouraged to register their bicycles on www.bikeregister.com.
The police bike marking initiative is part of a broader community event on January 25 called South Molton Gets Together, organised by One South Molton. This free wellbeing event at the Assembly Rooms promises a day filled with activities for all ages, refreshments, and music.
