The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice, impacting South West England, particularly Cornwall and Devon. The warning is valid from 22:00pm on Wednesday, January 17, until 11:00am on Thursday, January 18.

Parts of North Devon are expected to be hit with ice and snow showers, potentially causing challenging travel conditions on Thursday morning.

Some roads and railways are likely to be affected, leading to longer journey times for road, bus, and train services. There may be icy patches on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, increasing the risk of slips and falls.

For those driving in icy conditions, planning your route, checking for delays and road closures, and leaving extra time to prepare and check your car are crucial steps.

Ensuring wipers, tyres, and screen wash are in good condition and packing essentials such as warm clothing, food, and a fully charged mobile phone are recommended.

While it is safer not to drive in icy conditions, if necessary, drivers should look well ahead for hazards, keep speed down, and use a higher gear for better traction on packed ice.

Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to plan journeys carefully, using treated pavements and main roads, and wearing footwear with good grip.

Residents are encouraged to check on elderly relatives or neighbours during icy weather, offering practical help and ensuring they have enough food supplies in case they cannot go out.

Staying informed about weather updates and following precautions can help mitigate the risks associated with wintry conditions.
