Newly formed Appledore Women’s Football Team has achieved an impressive 14-game unbeaten streak in their first season, securing a spot in the Women's County Cup Semi Finals after a commanding 7-1 victory against Horrabridge.

Formed at the start of the current season, the team has quickly risen in the Devon Women’s Football League North East division, led by manager Martin Windsor.

Andy Taylor, chairman of Appledore Football Club, enlisted Martin to lead the women’s team, aiming for a comprehensive representation of both men’s and women’s sides.

Martin, with a background in running youth girl teams, embraced the opportunity to contribute to the club’s vision for women’s football. He said: “The vision the club had for women’s football is fantastic and I jumped at the chance to work at such a family and inclusive club.”

Appledore Women currently lead the league, boasting 13 victories out of 14 matches played. Captain Beth Ellis, with 18 goals in league and cup competitions, has become a standout player. The squad, comprising a mix of young talents and experienced players, fosters inclusivity, providing a fun environment for players to express themselves on the field.

The historic county cup quarterfinal match against Horrabridge showcased the team’s expertise, securing a semi-finals spot in their debut season. The 7-1 triumph, featuring goals from Beth Ellis (3), Laylah Windsor (2), Sarah Short and Chelsea Cadle, demonstrated their strength against a formidable opponent leading the South West division.

Team manager Martin has extended an invitation to anyone interested in joining the team. The team trains every Thursday at Kingsley College, Bideford, at 6,30pm and welcomes participants aged 16 and above. Martin is supported by fellow coaches Steve Windsor and Neil Darnley, with safeguarding officer Sam Ayres ensuring the well-being of all involved.
