The new defibrillator has been installed outside of the Samaritans branch on Summerland Street in Barnstaple.
North Devon Samaritans have recently installed a fully functional and well-lit defibrillator outside their Summerland Street branch in Barnstaple.
It was made possible through a collaborative effort with the charity Jay's Aim, which generously provided the defibrillator. Now, this life-saving tool is accessible to the public in that area of the town centre.
Jay's Aim was established in Jay Osbourne’s name with the target of reducing the rate of sudden cardiac death among young people in South West England. Jay died suddenly at 28 years old. After his death, it was learnt that Jay had an undiagnosed inherited heart condition, and that this had caused a fatal cardiac arrest.
While the hope is that it never needs to be used, the defibrillator stands ready to potentially save lives in emergency situations. The Samaritans have taken proactive steps to ensure its effectiveness by providing training sessions for over 25 volunteers on how to use this crucial device.
Looking ahead to 2024, volunteers at Samaritans of North Devon have expressed their commitment to extending outreach efforts. They aim to connect with the community, with a particular focus on young teenagers and isolated communities that may find support beneficial.
The Samaritans are open to organising outreach events and talks for any groups in need, encouraging those with contacts to get in touch.
As an independent charity, North Devon Samaritans face the challenge of raising £26,000 annually to sustain these vital services. With no central funding, the charity relies on donations, local sponsorships and grants. The dedication of 90 volunteers keeps the branch running and supports those in need.
In the coming year, the Samaritans are exploring creative ways to enhance their visibility in the community. Plans include searching for and sponsoring a local roundabout to prominently display their presence, share the helpline number, and potentially attract new volunteers
If you feel you need to talk to the Samaritans, you can call free on 116 123.
