Construction is set to commence on a new pedestrian crossing down the hill from the Cedars roundabout in Barnstaple.

Beginning on Monday, January 22, the project aims to streamline traffic movement and enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

The initiative includes 'innovative' features, such as sensors linked to the Fremington side of the roundabout, intended to ease queuing for drivers approaching from Fremington but have to give way to traffic from Roundswell.

But the plans have not met with approval from some locals, who have taken to social media to ask why the crossing is necessary and have said they fear the temporary lights and then the crossing itself will simply add more misery to what is already a Barnstaple traffic jam hotspot.

The temporary traffic lights will be in place on Cedars roundabout for 20 weeks from January 22. Drivers are warned to expect delays and allow extra time for their journey.

The comprehensive works encompass:

        •       Widening the southern arm of the roundabout to accommodate the new staggered signalised crossing
        •       Realignment of existing hedgebanks, utilising the existing stone for sustainability
        •       Introduction of new street lighting, road markings, and signage
        •       Installation of traffic sensors in the road
        •       Relocation of utility company pipes and cables

While temporary traffic lights at the roundabout will primarily oversee the construction, occasional overnight road closures (6.30pm - 7am) are planned for approximately 15 nights during the project.

This measure ensures the safe execution of specific elements of the work. The project is entrusted to Bridge Civil Engineering Ltd, working on behalf of Devon County Council.

In response to environmental considerations, the removal of 10 trees last year has led to arrangements with North Devon Council for the planting of 30 new trees in suitable locations nearby, contributing to the ecological balance of the area.

Devon County Council’s Cabinet approved the improvement scheme for the Cedars Junction in March 2022. Prior to this decision, the North Devon Highways and Traffic Orders Committee extensively reviewed various options in June 2017, with subsequent meetings in June 2019 and November 2021 shaping the direction of the project.

Funding for the scheme has been secured through contributions from housing developments in the area. These funds have been exclusively allocated to this project.
