Students from schools across Devon and Somerset have had the opportunity to showcase their digital skills in a competition organised by a programme which aims to inspire young people to consider digital careers.

Raising Digital Engagement at KS3 is a Heart of the South West LEP funded scheme, managed by Devon County Council, which aims to help schools promote and raise digital career opportunities among pupils aged 11 to 14.

Schools that have signed up to the project were invited to take part in the programme’s first competition – titled Marvellous Marketers.

Pupils were asked to create an eye-catching logo for the project that grabs the audience’s attention, makes a strong first impression and is understood by the audience.

It was a tough competition, but a winner was chosen by a panel of judges: Lee Potter from Big Wave Marketing, who specialise in creating logos, Simone Marillier – Devon County Council Economic Development Officer for Raising Digital Engagement, and Debra Steel – Devon County Council Senior Economic Development Officer for External Programmes.

Samson Evans, aged 12, from Devonport High School for Boys, created a vibrant and eye-catching design which was awarded first place.

Samson said: “I feel really happy about winning and I’m glad I entered the competition; I feel like I developed my design skills a lot!”

As competition winner, Samson won a £25 WHSmith’s voucher and a £250 gift voucher for his school.

Two runners up were Adam Jedrzejczyk, from King Arthur’s School in Wincanton, and Sebastian Miskiewicz, from Devonport High School for Boys.

Lee Potter, from Big Wave Marketing, said: “I was honoured to serve as a judge for the Marvellous Marketers Competition’s logo contest, tasked with reviewing the entries and selecting the winning ‘Raising Digital Engagement’ logo. The winning design caught our attention with its vibrant colours, clarity, and distinctive style. Congratulations to the talented winner and all those that entered.”

Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Cabinet Member for Economic Recovery and Skills, said: “We would like to thank everyone who entered this competition. Some excellent, high-quality designs were submitted and congratulations to Samson on his winning logo, well done! The Raising Digital Engagement at KS3 programme is designed to demonstrate how the digital skills learnt in school translate to the world of work, and this sort of competition is a great way for pupils to develop their digital skills.”

Karl Tucker, Chair of the Heart of the South West LEP, said: “Inspiring the next generation and setting them up with the skills to succeed in today’s digital age is vital. This competition, part of the Raising Digital Engagement at KS3 scheme, is a fantastic way for students to learn and showcase those skills. We were delighted to see their enthusiasm and creativity come to life.”
