New town hall venue in Buckfastleigh allows funeral services to be tailored with music, layout and personal touches
A funeral home on the edge of Dartmoor has begun holding new services at the town hall, offering families a more flexible and personalised alternative to traditional funeral venues.
Co-op Funeralcare in Buckfastleigh, located behind St Luke’s Church on Plymouth Road, has introduced the option of hosting ceremonies at Buckfastleigh Town Hall.

The move is aimed at giving local people greater choice over how they say goodbye to loved ones.
Buckfastleigh Town Hall’s setting allows families to ‘take a more adaptable approach’ to funeral arrangements.
This can include changing the layout of the room, incorporating personal decorations, and choosing music or photographs that reflect the life of the person being remembered.
The town hall’s first ceremony has recently taken place, held in the recently refurbished Huw Cox Room.
This space is designed to accommodate a range of service styles, offering flexibility for both small, intimate gatherings and larger attendances.
Staff at the Co-Op funeral home say the change reflects a growing demand for more personalised services, with families increasingly looking for ways to make funerals more meaningful and reflective of individual lives.
Tracy Dommett, Funeral Arranger at Co-op Funeralcare Buckfastleigh, said the focus remains on providing choice and supporting families during a difficult time.
“Every goodbye is personal and choice for individuals and families is paramount, so we’re pleased to be working with the Buckfastleigh Town Hall to offer another level of person-centred ceremonies to families,” she said.
“Enabling our community to say goodbye in a way that feels entirely personal to them is always our main focus.
“The new venue means some families may not need to travel far, and they can have the service exactly as they wish, from the layout of the room to the decorations.
“We know funerals can be a difficult topic to discuss, but we also hope the move will make people feel more comfortable.”
The introduction of the town hall as a venue may also reduce the need for families to travel outside the area, keeping services within the local community.
This can be particularly important for those wishing to hold ceremonies in familiar surroundings.
The initiative highlights a wider shift within the funeral sector towards more flexible and individual approaches, as providers respond to changing expectations around how people choose to mark and remember lives.
By offering an alternative setting in the heart of Buckfastleigh, the funeral home aims to support families in creating services that feel both personal and accessible, while remaining rooted in the local community
