Victory for Torquay Leander

There were plenty of reasons to celebrate for Torquay Leander Swimming Club this season, 101 of them to be precise, and the joy extended far beyond the final scoresheet.

Continuing their impressive start of their defence of the East Devon Mini League, Torquay Leander once again proved themselves the team to beat. The competition, featuring squads from Paignton, Torquay, Newton Abbot, Exeter, Exmouth and Dawlish, showcased the very best of young swimming talent across the region.

Heading into the second round at Riverside Leisure Centre with a slim four-point advantage, Torquay Leander faced a demanding format. All 34 races were relays, placing emphasis firmly on squad depth across all age groups. Rising to the challenge, the team delivered a superb performance, winning 19 races and extending their lead to a commanding 30 points ahead of the final round.

The decisive third round took place at the state-of-the-art St Sidwell’s Point Leisure Centre, where a revised set of age categories gave other swimmers with the club opportunity to swim. With a mix of relay and individual races, the event tested not just individual talent but depth across all age groups.

Once again, Torquay Leander rose to the occasion. Backed by some fantastic support from parents in the stands and encouragement from senior swimmers’ poolside, the team delivered a disciplined performance. Out of 55 races, they secured victory in 25 and crucially, completed the entire round without a single disqualification, which had been a concern in the first round.

Their performance across all rounds ensured in the end a comfortable overall victory, marking their third consecutive Mini League title.

Final Standings – 2026 East Devon Mini League:
Torquay Leander – 684
Exmouth – 583
Newton Abbot – 502
Exeter – 447
Paignton – 377
Dawlish – 297

For Torquay Leander, this was more than just another win. It was a testament to teamwork, depth, and the club’s thriving development pathway, at 129 years since the club first began, its future continues to look as strong as ever.
